Roma Learning to Fly is committed to providing life-changing educational opportunities for Roma students, at every stage of the educational journey. One of the ways we seek to do this is through providing scholarships for young women pursuing post-secondary studies and who demonstrate a commitment to positive change in their communities.
In March 2019, we were proud to partner with the Slovak Embassy in the US, to award the Burian Scholarship to a Roma student, Alena Gorlova. The Burian Scholarship is named after Peter Burian, former Slovak Ambassador to the United States. Funds for the scholarship were raised by the US Honorary Consuls of the Slovak Republic residing in the US.
The $1,000 award was presented to Alena by Roma Learning to Fly Executive Director, William Howell and Board Chair, Joseph Grabill. Ms. Gorlova is currently attending St. Elizabeth University in Bratislava. She serves as a coach with Roma Learning To Fly and works with Roma parents in preparing their children for first entry into school.
