Local group partners with Slovak Republic to award scholarship
The Slovak Embassy in the US has announced that the 2019 winner of the Burian Scholarship has been awarded to Alena Gorlova, a Roma student attending St. Elizabeth University in Bratislava. The Burian Scholarship is named for Peter Burian, former Slovak Ambassador to the United States. Funds for the scholarship were raised by the US Honorary Consuls of the Slovak Republic residing in the US.
The $1,000 award was presented to Alena by Mr. William Howell and Mr. Joseph Grabill, representatives of the USA non-profit organization “Roma Learning To Fly” whose mission is committed to providing life-changing educational opportunities to Roma families in Central/Eastern Europe. Ms. Gorlova serves as a coach in a Roma Learning To Fly initiative designed to assist Roma parents in preparing their children for first entry into school. ... See MoreSee Less

This fall, Roma Learning to Fly was pleased to announce that Alena Gorlova is the recipient of the Burian Scholarship. Named for Peter Burian, former Slovak Ambassador to the United States, the award was made by the Honorary Consular Corps of Slovakia serving in the U.S. The Corps represents the interests of the Slovak government and raises the funds for the scholarship through a variety of means.
Alena is currently pursuing a Master’s Degree in Social Work at the St. Elizabeth University. She has been involved in community work in Sol, Slovakia and serves as a coach in the Discover Parent Seminar, a Roma Learning to Fly initiative designed to assist parents prepare their children for first entry into school.
